I had to read the story twice to believe it. First a unannounced visit by the French Foreign Minister to Baghdad and now a statement that the French are planning to lend aid to the United States in Iraq. Kind of takes your breath away.Of course there are no details as to the extent of this aid. Yet the fact that they have acknowledged we are doing important work and have offered to help must send shivers up Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid's spines. I mean if the French are seeing the need for a stable Iraq and that plan we have instituted is working, then the bottom is out of the tub for these two and the rest of "the war is lost" crowd.
Not to demean the French offer but I am sure there are some politics behind the scenes. I doubt that they are willing to extend any offer of aid unless there is some quid pro quo attached. In the past the French had close ties to Iraq. Hopefully Sarkozy and the Iraqi government will not be like Chirac and Hussien. If the Iraqi's are going to survive they will need the help of partners like France.
It is heartening see that the relations between the French and ourselves are improving politically. Its not only the Iraqi's that are going to need their help, we need all the friends we can get.
